Maths Week February 2012 (62 images)
The children and staff have had a great time enjoying a wide variety of exciting activities to make maths ?come alive? for the children. The special visits from Ross and Cheryl from Make Believe Arts and Leanne from the ?Puzzle Company? complemented the children's learning in their day to day maths lessons. It was great that so many parents were able to attend the sessions on Wednesday. Thank you to Mrs Dunt and Mrs Roopun for organising these. A good number of parents have said that they found the meetings and the booklets helpful, with lots of good ideas as to how best to help and encourage the children with maths. It is essential that our children develop their mathematical skills and can apply them confidently - it makes such a difference to their options in adult life. Mufti

Strictly Come Praising (7 images)
Simply Come Praising! The children and staff have had a great time this week enjoying our first ever St Matthew's Praise Week. Do have a look at the photographs on the school website and examples of the children?s work displayed around the school. All week the school has echoed to the sounds of different styles of music including African dancing and singing with a worship band. The children have also enjoyed a puppet show, art and craft activities, writing prayers and poems, exploring St Matthew's church and making ?Peace Mala? bracelets to keep as a memento of this special week. The week has helped us to learn valuable key messages from different religions and to enhance the wonderful sense of unity here at St Matthew's School and celebrate our different faith backgrounds. We are grateful to Miss Hansford, Mrs Burse and Father Andrew who organised this exciting programme of activities for us to enjoy and to our visitors who freely gave of their time and talents to be with us.

Red Nose Day (21 images)
On Friday 18 March the children and staff at St Matthew's CE Primary School, Linkfield Lane, Redhill did "something funny for money" by wearing their pyjamas to school! As part of the day's activities they also learned about the places and projects supported by Comic Relief and other charities. Mrs Lightfoot, Headteacher, said, "A strength of our school is the care and support shown to others in so many ways. In recent weeks the children, parents and staff have had a cake sale to support one of our pupils who is very unwell, awaiting further hospital treatment. Also, as we have families from Japan, we have been able to contribute in a small way to showing our care for the people there. It is important that the children learn about the needs in the wider world, in the UK and beyond."

A special visitor! We were proud to host yesterday's visit of Bishop Christopher, the Bishop of Southwark, to our school. The children, as always, represented our school extremely well, showing courtesy, enjoyment and pride in their school as Bishop Christopher was shown round our school, talking with children and adults. He and our other visitors including the Archdeacon of Reigate, Daniel Kajumba, expressed their appreciation to all who welcomed them and made their visit so enjoyable. Bishop Christopher was presented with a lovely souvenir book full of photographs, artwork writing and other examples of good quality work achieved by the children here at St Matthew?s. Thank you to Mrs Mercer and others who put the book together.

On Thursday 3rd March we celebrated World Book Day throughout the school by sharing our books with children from different classes. The older children brought in their favourite books from home and had a lovely time reading them to younger children. Some children even prepared questions on their story to ask the younger children. It was a really enjoyable activity for all children, as the photographs show.

Football Coaching (7 images)
Since September boys and girls at St Matthew's have enjoyed specialist football coaching from our friends at Redhill Town FC. The photographs show lesson time fun for children in class 3R. Children in Year 2 enjoy weekly football sessions as part of their PE lessons. Each Monday there is an after-school football club for children of all ages. In addition there are lunchtime training sessions for the older children who represent St Matthew's in our school team. As well as developing the children's football techniques, general ball skills and spacial awareness these sessions also enable the children to interact with adults other than their teachers and parents and develop their self confidence and social skills. It's great fun too! Many of the children from St Matthew's School enjoy playing football at weekends for local teams including Redhill Town. www.redhillltownfc.co.uk

Chinese visitors (3 images)
In January we were pleased to host a visit by two teachers from Shaoxing University in China. Joanna Haiping and Hongping Gu were with us here at St Matthew?s School as part of a professional development programme enabling them to learn about the English education system and way of life. The visit also, of course, benefited our children and teachers by providing opportunities to learn about China and the education system there.

Year 2 Trip to the Lookout Discovery Centre (7 images)
Year 2 recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Lookout Discovery Centre in Bracknell. The centre is full of lots of fun, interactive, hands on science activities. The children all enjoyed the trip and loved trying out all of the activities. We made fuel then launched a rocket, sent a hot air balloon up to the ceiling and made whirl pools and mini tornados. We also had a show about pushes and pulls, our next topic in science. We learnt how everything needs a force to move. We were asked to jump in the air and stay there, but we couldn?t manage this - apparently gravity was pulling us all back down! We leant all about how exciting science is and had a brilliant day with lovely memories. The trip was great fun and a lot of the children now want to return with their parents.

Nativity 2010 (14 images)
Nativity 2010 Here at St Matthew's children, parents and staff overcame the snowy weather to keep school open until the end of term! We were determined to hold our carol service and nativity play as planned. The only concession to the weather was that it took place in the school hall rather than St Matthew?s Church. Parents, teachers and children filled the hall as the youngest children, dressed as angels, wise men, shepherds and, of course, Mary and Joseph, performed the story of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The oldest children presented eloquent Christmas readings and everyone joined in heartily to sing traditional carols. The children in Year 4 who are all learning to play the clarinet entertained with a musical rendition of ?Jingle Bells.?

Trip to Southwark Cathedral We had a great time at Southwark cathedral and they showed us around the church. We had a look at lots of Christian symbols and after that we made a clay tile with Christian symbols on it. We went on the 9th of November 2010. We saw lots of things on the train and we nearly fell asleep on the way back. We had a great time and we would definitely want to go again. By Kevin Chung & Nathan Poole

Book Week (5 images)
Book Week (11th - 15th October 2010) Book Week is always one of the highlights of the year at St Matthew's. The children enjoyed a special week of activities on the theme "Stories from Around the World." Highlights of the week included the children working with professional storytellers, a Sponsored Readathon and class visits to Redhill library to learn about and enjoy their facilities. The children have also enjoyed reading and sharing stories with children from other classes. The Friends of St Matthew's Parent Teacher Association ran a successful book sale where popular titles, fiction and non-fiction books, were snapped up by the children, eager to have more books to read at home as well as at school. The children at St Matthew's love reading and hearing stories and enjoy a wide range of creative activities, art, music, drama, to help them develop their vocabulary, comprehension and awareness and confidence with written and spoken language. The ability to read confidently is key to success for the children both at school and also in their adult lives. We are proud of our children's achievements here at St Matthew's and their positive enjoyment of reading.

New Guinea Pigs! (2 images)
The children in Sun Class, our Special Needs Support Centre, have welcomed two new friends to their class. The guinea pigs, named Rosie and Lily, will be used to help the children who have autism to develop their learning across the curriculum and also benefit their social skills and understanding of others. We are very grateful to Patrick the manager at "Pets At Home" in Redhill who generously donated the guinea pigs, the hutch and other equipment. The children have already enjoyed caring for and learning about Rosie and Lily.

River Wey Trip (2 images)
On the 21st June the children in Year 4, led by Mr Armitage, enjoyed a fantastic day exploring the area around the River Wey. This was part of their geography lessons, learning about rivers, and a brand new venue for one of our school trips. In the morning, half the group walked from Byfleet Boat Club to Woodham Junction whilst the other children were rowed there in the club's dinghies. Then the children swopped over for the return journey. After lunch the National Trust lengthsman, Dave, explained how the river is maintained so that people can enjoy the waterway whilst also caring for the creatures and plants whose habitat it is. The next stop was Pyrford Marina from where we walked upstream to Newark Lock. Mr Armitage demonstrated how the lock works to enable boats to move along the waterway. The children found this very interesting. It really was a memorable day for the children and a challenge for some of the accompanying teachers and parents who rowed the dinghies! Thank you to everyone who made this such a great trip, especially the members of Byfleet Boat Club who were so welcoming and helpful.
