Newsletter 5 Spring 2010

You are invited to a special Mothering Sunday service at St Matthew's Church on 14th March 10am. Children from our school will be involved in the service, singing, presenting readings & prayers.

Busy week

It's been a busy week back following the half term break. From conversations with the children it's been good to hear that many of them enjoyed activities with family and friends such as going swimming, playing in the park, visiting the library and other places of interest rather than spending every waking hour in front of a computer or television screen!

At school this week children in Year 5 have enjoyed a percussion/drumming workshop at St Bede's School while Year 2 visited Earlswood Mosque as part of their RE lessons.

Looking ahead to the next school year the booking has been confirmed for the Year 6 residential trip to Carroty Wood activity centre. We are delighted that almost all the children in current Year 5 are coming, they will have a great time and benefit so much. Further details will be available soon.

We have also begun the process of recruiting for a new deputy headteacher to take over from Mr Rhodes. Although Mr Rhodes leaves at Easter it is most likely that the person appointed to replace him will join St Matthew's in September.

Football Result

Royal Alexandra & Albert 2 St Matthew's 2
Our team played extremely well , showing great determination to come back from two goals down. Thank you to parents and staff who encourage and practise with the children and also provide transport to away fixtures.

Parents evenings

We are looking forward to meeting with parents this coming week to discuss your child's progress and how parents and teachers can work together to help the children to achieve their best. If you have not yet received an appointment time please contact your child's class teacher.

Monday 1st March 3.30pm - 6.00pm
Wednesday 3rd March 5.30pm - 8.00pm

(Years 5 & 6 have additional times on Tuesday 2nd March 3.30pm - 6.00pm so that parents can meet with maths and literacy group teachers as well as the class teacher.)

During the last couple of weeks the school's leadership team (Mrs Lightfoot, Mr Rhodes and Mrs Sears) have met with all classteachers to discuss each child and their individual progress and attainment levels. We have also identified what needs to be done to ensure each child achieves their best.

How you can help your child

As we looked through all the information about the children's progress and how well they were doing it was very obvious that the children who are making most progress are those who attend school every day, who behave well and whose parents support their learning by, for example reading with their children, practising times tables and spellings, spending time talking with their children, helping their vocabulary and imagination, playing games, going swimming etc. Thank you to parents who do these things - your children are benefiting. Ensuring that the children go to bed at an appropriate time without the distraction of television, computer etc and eat regular meals, particularly breakfast also helps the children do their best in in lessons.

If you would like advice and ideas as to how you can best help your child please speak with your child's teacher at parents evening.

Parent Voice

Thank you to everyone who came to this morning's Parent Voice, a great opportunity to join with school staff to meet together informally for coffee and to discuss how we can continue to make our school a great place for our children.

If you were unable to come but have suggestions or ideas or would like to help with school activities please contact Mrs Lightfoot.
